30 Years of Modern Internet – Legendary Dr Vinton G Cerf, Father of Internet Speaks Exclusively to PodUniversal

Emergence of modern internet

Thirty years ago, on 1st January 1983, the world entered a new era of communication with the birth of ‘Modern Internet’ which we use today.  This communication revolution was made by the TCP/IP protocol, was developed by Dr. Vinton G. Cerf and Robert E. Kahn.  They are now considered ‘Fathers of Modern Internet’.

In those days, ARPANET was the wide-area network sponsored by the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It went live in 1969, when Vinton Cerf was an ARPANET scientist at the Stanford University. The military became interested in a common protocol as different networks and systems using different and proprietary protocols began to hook up to ARPANET, and they found that they could not talk to each other easily.

On 1st January 1983, the new Internet Protocol TCP/IP, which replaced the older system, was accepted as the standard and the modern  Internet was born. The Internet, a revolutionary and cost-effective communication system has transformed the lives of billions of people across the world. Using data "packet-switching", the new method of linking computers and sharing information paved the way for the arrival of the World Wide Web.

Interaction with Dr Vinton G Cerf

Dr. Vinton G. Cerf (70), the main architect of Modern Internet, is presently the President and CEO of Google Special Services Inc. and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google.  He visited Chennai in mid-January 2013 to participate in the annual meeting of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) – India Council.  Dr. Vinton is the International President of ACM.  We had the opportunity of recording his inspiring interview for PodUniversal and PreSense.  (Link for his interview is given at the end of this article).

While people with less qualification and achievement pose themselves as great men, this legendary person, who revolutionalised the entire globe with his invention, looked very simple and humble.  In the 45 minutes of conversation we had with him, he spoke and came across as a very simple man.

Awards and recognition

Dr. Vinton Cerf has received hundreds of national and international awards for his achievement.  He is also the recipient of the ‘Turing Award’ for Technology, equivalent to the Nobel Prize, in Computing.  Recently, President Obama has appointed him as a member of National Science Board in US Government.

Dr. Vinton suffered from a hearing impairment from an early age, and he later attributed some of his interest in computer networking to its promise as an alternative communications channel for the hearing impaired. His personal disability triggered a great communication revolution in the globe.

Exclusive interview with PodUniversal

In an exclusive interview with K. Srinivasan, Editor-in-Chief of PreSense and PodUniversal, Dr. Vinton said that at the time of the invention, his team had high hopes that this would become a powerful infrastructure in future.  “I think those hopes have been largely realised” he added proudly.

On computer security, he said, “There is still plenty of work to be done on the technical side and on the training side to get users to adopt safer communication practices.”  He suggested ‘two factor authentication’ for the safety of the users.

On his passion, his achievement, and his message to the Indian youth, he said, “The simple message here is that you need to be really passionate about making something happen and you better be prepared to be patient and persistent because some ideas, the Net included, will not be widely accepted.”  In the same breath, he also appreciated Indian entrepreneurs for exporting their skill, talents and inventions to the rest of the world.

PreSense is proud to feature him as ‘Man of the month’ (though he is the Man of the Century) in the current issue, when the world celebrates the 30th year of modern Internet.

How Indian telephony users perceive? A snap report

K. Srinivasan, presenting the snap survey report
Prime Point Foundation and Corporate ezine PR-e-Sense conducted an online 'snap survey' during the second week of June 2009 to quickly understand the perception of various Indian telephony users. The survey coverred landline, mobile, broadband and DTH/Cable TV services. The survey findings were presented by K. Srinivasan, Chairman, Prime Point Foundation on 20th June 2009 in a Seminar organised by Consumers Association of India (CAI) jointly with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

1. Generally, the BSNL users are critical of the quality of service (QOS) and customer care provided by BSNL. Generally consumers are more concered that BSNL is not giving tough competition to the private operators. This attitude of BSNL is not in the interest of the Nation.

2. Users from Private operators are critical of the customer care and lack of transparency in their tariff structure. Though TRAI has directed that all the operators should have a proper system in place for customer care and to provide 'escalation path' like call centre, nodal officer, appelate authority, etc. I personally found that they are more in paper. In some of the sites, it is difficult to get the numbers of the nodal officers. In many cases, the numbers will not be picked up anybody.

TRAI was represented by Mr Mathew Palamattam, Deputy Advisor. Airtel, Aircel, Vodofone, BSNL were represented by their middle level Officers. Tata Indicom and Reliance did not send any representative.

From the various deliberations, I observed that TRAI does not have enough 'teeth' or 'powers' to punish/penalise the erring operators. I understand that TRAI has powers only to announce rules and regulations. When the operators do not care for such rules, possibly, TRAI also will join the consumers only to 'weep'. They cannot do anything more. Only Government can explain as to why they keep TRAI 'teethless'.

Computer networks globally are under vulnerability risk - How to resolve?

PodUniversal Edition 66

Globally, computer networks are under heavy risk. Many of the networks are highly vulnerable for being hacked. If the companies using IT networks do not take care of the 'Information security' aspects, and if there is any data theft from their computers, legally the companies are liable to the customers or to the aggrieved parties. This will also result in the reputation and business loss.

Not only the IT companies should worry about the Information security, but also the Non-IT companies who are using IT networks have to address this issue urgently.

While the companies go for ISO 9000, they do not get the certification for ISO 27001, which takes care of the information security. Nowadays, many of the International companies insist on ISO 27001 for awarding any projects. In future, the companies, who are not certified with ISO 27001 may not be able to get the projects at global market.

On behalf of PodUniversal. we interviewed Mr N R Krishnakumar (Director - Operations), DNV, one of the Global Certifying Authorities and Mr M L Srinivasan, CEO, ChennaiNet, a Vulnerability assessment expert and ISO Auditor to understand the latest trends and risks.

Normally, around 10 percent of the school going children get dropped out from the schDr Santhosh Babu IASools in rural areas, for various reasons, and mainly due to poverty. Such children are being exploited as child labour and their talents get wasted. Every District Administration in India has been empowered with various schemes and enough funds.

In addition, Sarava Shikshya Abhyan, National child labour project and UNICEF also support the district administrations for sending these children back to school. Many such programmes are not implemented well due to lack of initiatives from many of the District Collectors across the country.

In his earlier assigned as District Collector of Krishnagiri district, he ws very successful in reducing the child labour and school drop outs to the extent of 95 to 97%. According to Dr Santhosh Babu, (i) identification and tracking of such children (ii) offering convergence package of schemes to such families would solve the problems for ever. They have also developed a new website www.back2school.in for this purpose.

Moving towards second green revolution in India

Mr C Subramanian, former Union Agriculture Minister
PodUniversal - Edition 48

In the early 1960s, when India was facing acute food crisis, the then Union Agriculture Minister Mr C Subramanian, popularly known as CS, (picture) took serious initiatives in bringing together many scientists and brought in the 'Green Revolution'. CS is now considered the architect and the father of Indian Green Revolution. Recognising his contribution to the food security, Indian Government honoured him with the highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna'. The first Green revolution was focusing on "Seed to Grain". That means production was given more importance to manage the difficult food situation then.

CS did not stop with this. Till the his 90th birthday, he was thinking over the next green revolution, to remove the negative aspects of first green revolution. In the year 2000. on this 90th birthday, he started his initiative towards second green revolution and started a trust "National Agro Foundation"(NAF). He roped in many eminent people and scientists to 'institutionalise' the movement. Dr Abdul Kalam is also associated with this movement, from the inception. After the death of CS, Dr Kalam became the Chairman of the Board of Governors, till he became the President of India. Now many eminent scientists and visionaries are governing this foundation.

The second green revolution focuses on "soil to market" as against the earlier "seed to grain". The initiative is to help the farmers to understand their soil and then finally to help them to get a good market for their products. Dr Abdul Kalam visited the adopted villages by this foundation on 15th October 2008 and celebrated his birthday with these villagers. Through this gesture, Dr Kalam showed the importance of agriculture and rural segment to the youngsters.

Following the foot steps of Dr Kalam, the representatives from the partner groups of 'India Vision 2020' also visited these villages on 1st November 2008, to understand the importance of second green revolution and to take it forward., terming this as 'Rural Tourism'. In this exclusive podcast, Mr Rajsekar, son of Mr C Subramanian and presently the Managing Trustee of National Agro Foundation talks about the activities of NAF and how they plan to take it forward to the entire nation.
